Mental Models

Ideas I keep coming back to.

  • What pain do you want in your life? What are you willing to struggle for?
  • How does the action you're doing right now translate into achieving your goals? If it doesn't, are you okay with that tradeoff?
  • If you fast-forwarded to the end of your life and looked back, what could you do now to minimize the regrets you'll one day have?
  • Imagine someone is always following you around, recording your actions. How would you feel watching it played back?
  • Are you doing the things you know you should, or filling your time and attention with distractions that don't advance your main goals?
  • Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, what can you do to build a life you don't need to escape from?
  • Would you make that purchase if nobody could see you with it or know about it? (How does ego play into your purchases?)
  • Picture your week as 100 units of time. What percentage would you fast-forward if you could — and what would it take to reduce that number?
  • Is the group you're part of bound together by mutual love of an in-group, or hate of an out-group?
  • Are you truly listening, or waiting for your turn to speak?
  • When faced with two choices, the one with delayed gratification is probably the best one.
  • There are no solutions, only tradeoffs.
  • If you don't know someone personally, don't judge them — otherwise you're giving a stranger more power over you than your own judgment.
  • How hard you work is an economy of scale — working 80 hours a week vs. 40 often produces more than 2x the results.
  • If you're truly a critical thinker, you'll hold some views that aren't mainstream. Controversial doesn't mean wrong.
  • You won't find rare results in an average lifestyle. Act like the average person and expect to be average.
  • Money is a tool, not the end. It can buy freedom, but some use it to imprison themselves.
  • Wealth is the ratio between your net worth and your lifestyle. Make $500k and spend $500k and you're living paycheck to paycheck.
  • Inflating your lifestyle to your income resets your hedonic treadmill and traps you. Keep your cost of living below your income to maximize freedom.
  • If you think of a compliment, tell them.
